Materials Science

Materials Science and Engineering is the application of principles from physics, chemistry, and engineering to understand the properties and performance of materials. Given that the behavior of an engineering material is governed not only by its chemical composition but also by its processing history, Materials Science and Engineering allows for the evaluation of material properties that arise from thermal, chemical, mechanical, or electrical processing. Materials evaluations are used to perform both root cause failure analyses and determine how the properties of a material evolve over the service lifetime of a system or product. Materials Science and Engineering is also used to perform materials selection as a part of product design, taking into consideration and balancing service requirements such as mechanical strength, durability, and corrosion resistance.
